How to Write a Resume Format for Freshers in India (2026 Guide)
If you're a B.Tech, MBA, or any other fresh graduate in India, your resume is doing one job and one job only — getting you to the interview round. That single page (sometimes two) determines whether your application enters a human's inbox or quietly dies inside a hiring tool.
Here's the uncomfortable truth: the "resume format" you copied from a Naukri sample isn't enough anymore. Every major Indian company — TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture, Flipkart, Razorpay, Swiggy — runs your file through an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) before any recruiter sees it. If the ATS can't read your resume, your application is rejected automatically. Your CGPA, your projects, your shiny IIT/NIT tag — none of it matters.

The One-Page Rule (and When to Break It)
Indian recruiters spend 6 to 10 seconds on the first scan of a fresher resume. Two pages is one page too many. Until you have at least 5 years of substantial work experience, your resume should fit on a single A4 page. Anything longer signals you can't prioritise — a red flag for any role.
The exception: if you're an MBA graduate from a top school with multiple internships, projects, and case competition wins, two pages is acceptable for management-track applications.
For B.Tech, B.Com, B.Sc, BBA, BCA, MCA, M.Tech, and similar programs, stick to one page. Period.
The Standard Section Order for Indian Freshers
The order of sections matters more than most people think. Recruiters scan top-to-bottom and stop reading the moment something doesn't grab them. Lead with what's strongest about your profile.
For most Indian freshers, the right order is:
- Personal Details (name, phone, email, LinkedIn, location)
- Career Objective (3-4 lines, tailored to the role)
- Education (degree, college, year, CGPA — leads for freshers)
- Internships (treated like full roles)
- Projects (3-5 strong ones, technical or otherwise)
- Technical Skills or Skills (grouped by category)
- Certifications (NPTEL, Coursera, Udemy, AWS, Google)
- Achievements & Awards (academic, competition, leadership)
- Hobbies & Interests (4-6 specific ones)
For MBA freshers, swap Projects with Leadership/Extracurriculars and add Case Competitions.
For non-technical roles (HR, Marketing, Finance), demote Technical Skills and lead with Internships earlier.
Personal Details — Get the Basics Right
This is one of the easiest places to lose recruiter trust. Your contact section should be clean, professional, and parseable.
Include:
- Full name (no nicknames)
- Phone with +91 country code
- Professional email (firstname.lastname@gmail.com — never that 2009 yahoo handle)
- LinkedIn URL (custom slug, not the default linkedin.com/in/abc-xyz-123abc)
- City, State (no street address)
- Optional: Portfolio URL, GitHub for tech roles
Skip:
- Date of birth
- Father's name / mother's name (yes, even though Indian Naukri profiles ask for them, not on a resume)
- Marital status
- Religion / caste / category
- Photo (unless specifically required by the employer)
Career Objective — 3 Lines That Actually Help
The career objective is the most-misused section on Indian fresher resumes. Generic objectives ("seeking a challenging role to grow my career") tell recruiters nothing. They're tagged as filler and skipped entirely.
A good objective answers three questions in 3-4 sentences:
- Who are you? (B.Tech CSE graduate / MBA from XYZ / B.Com graduate with finance specialisation)
- What do you bring? (Specific skills — Python, SQL, financial modelling, marketing analytics)
- What role are you targeting? (Software engineer / product analyst / financial analyst / management trainee)
Bad objective:
"Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation where I can utilise my skills and contribute to the company's growth."
Good objective:
"B.Tech CSE graduate from VIT with internships at Razorpay (backend) and TCS (cloud). Proficient in Java, Spring Boot, AWS, and SQL. Seeking a Software Development Engineer role at [Company] to build scalable backend systems."
The good version names the school, the internships, the technologies, and the target role. The recruiter immediately knows whether to keep reading.

Education — Lead with Confidence
For freshers, Education is your strongest section. Lead with it.
Format per entry:
- Degree name and specialisation
- College name and university (if relevant)
- Graduation year (or "Expected May 2026" for current students)
- CGPA on a 10-point scale (or percentage for older systems)
- 1-2 lines of relevant coursework (only if you're applying to highly specialised roles)
Example:
Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science Engineering
Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore — 2026
CGPA: 8.6/10
Relevant Coursework: Operating Systems, DBMS, Algorithms, Distributed Systems
Include 10th and 12th board, school, year, and percentage if you scored above 75% or have a recognisable school name. For everyone else, leave them out — your degree matters more.
Internships — Treat Them Like Real Jobs
This is where most fresher resumes fall apart. Internships are listed as one-line entries — "Summer Intern, [Company], May-July 2025" — with no detail on what was actually done.
Wrong. Internships are your single strongest signal of work-readiness. Format each one like a full job:
Software Engineering Intern
Razorpay, Bengaluru — May 2025 to July 2025
• Built REST APIs in Spring Boot for the merchant onboarding flow,
handling 50K+ daily requests in production
• Reduced webhook delivery latency by 40% by introducing async
processing with Kafka
• Wrote unit tests in JUnit increasing module coverage from 62% to 88%
Three observations from a strong fresher internship bullet:
- Lead with the verb (Built, Reduced, Wrote, Designed, Migrated, Shipped)
- Include numbers (50K requests, 40% reduction, 62% to 88%)
- Mention the technology (Spring Boot, Kafka, JUnit) — ATS systems scan for these
If you have one internship, give it 4-5 strong bullet points. If you have three, 2-3 each. Quality over quantity.
If your bullet doesn't have a number or a specific technology, it's filler. Rewrite it. "Worked on cloud infrastructure" is filler. "Migrated 14 legacy services to AWS Lambda, reducing infra cost by ₹2.4 lakh/month" is a magnet.
Projects — Not All Projects Are Equal
A strong Projects section can carry an entire fresher resume. A weak one wastes space.
A great fresher project entry has:
- Project name (specific, not "Library Management System")
- 1 line on the problem solved
- Technologies used
- Measurable outcome or scale

by subject and study schedule

For tech roles, link to GitHub, deployment URLs, or demo videos. For non-tech roles (marketing, finance, design), link to a portfolio, case study writeup, or published work.
Pick the 3-5 strongest projects you've built. Final-year capstone projects, hackathon winners, internship side-projects, open-source contributions — these all qualify.
Skills — Group, Don't Dump
The skills section should be scannable in 5 seconds. Group skills by category and keep each group tight.

ATS Compatibility — The Non-Negotiables
Even the best content won't help if your resume can't be parsed. Here's what kills ATS compatibility:
- Tables — most ATS parsers treat each cell as a separate field, garbling your content
- Multi-column layouts — same problem
- Text inside images — completely invisible to parsers
- Headers and footers — often skipped entirely
- Decorative fonts — rendered as gibberish characters
- Coloured backgrounds with white text — often inverted and unreadable
Stick to a single-column, plain-text layout with standard section headings ("Experience" not "What I've Done"; "Education" not "Where I Studied"). Use professional fonts: Calibri, Arial, Inter, Times New Roman at 10-11pt.

File Format and Submission
Submit PDF unless the application portal explicitly says Word. PDFs preserve formatting across devices and parse correctly in every major Indian ATS. Word files render differently on different systems and risk formatting drift.
Name your file like a professional:

How many internships should I include on my fresher resume?
All of them — but with proportional detail. Strong, name-recognised internships get 4-5 bullets. Shorter or less impressive ones get 2-3. A 6-week internship at a tier-2 company is still worth listing if it gave you measurable outcomes.
Should I include a photo on my Indian fresher resume?
Optional. Most MNCs, product companies, and consulting firms don't expect or want photos. Some traditional Indian businesses, banks, and government roles do. When in doubt, leave it out.
What if I don't have any internship experience?
Lead heavily with Projects, Coursework, Certifications, and Extracurriculars. A strong fresher resume can be built around a great final-year project, two MOOCs from Coursera/NPTEL, and one leadership role in a college club. Quality always beats quantity.
Should I include my 10th and 12th marks?
If above 75% or from a recognisable school — yes. Otherwise leave them out for tech roles, where degree marks matter more. For government and PSU roles, include all academic records.
Can I have a separate Hobbies section?
